Access Windows Apps and Desktop Inside Virtual Reality
Oculus has developed a new update that allows users to access Windows apps and desktop inside VR. Its new update—Rift Core 2.0—is now available in beta. At fall’s Oculus Connect convention, Oculus announced three major parts of its update. It revealed Dash—a revamped interface, Home—a customizable space, and Oculus Desktop—which enables users access their Windows apps and desktop inside virtual reality.
Oculus Home was previously a fixed virtual environment that was also the interface’s metaphorical home base. Although it allowed users to launch apps, users could not do much in it. The new update allows users to add virtual objects to the space, starting with a catalog of a few hundred items. Some items are available by default, while others are unlocked by earning in-game bonus, weekly logging in to the app, and performing other tasks.
Oculus claims to add several more options later, some of which would include the ability to add objects by oneself. These objects could include sculptures from its Medium art program. So far, this update enables users to be able to view the surrounding area of each other’s home spaces, and a future update is expected to allow users to hang out in real time.
The latest update of Dash interface lets people access normal Oculus interface content as well as desktop apps, which appear as flat windows in the world.
There are several VR desktop apps available, however, a simple baked-in option is an interesting addition for Rift users, taking the VR experience to a whole new level altogether.
