Brightly Colored Bacteria can be used to Grow Non-Toxic Paints
Research reveals that brightly colored bacteria can be used to grow non-toxic paints, according to a study conducted on February 19, 2018.
This study uses genetics to change the color and appearance of few brightly colored bacteria. The results obtained showed that nanostructured materials can be manufactured in large scale by harvesting these bacteria. For instance, non-toxic biodegradable paint can be made using this method.
Bacteria’s that packs together in colonies and produce striking metallic colors are called flavobacterium. These metallic colors come from their internal structure and not from any pigments. Scientists are still astonished by the intricate structures nature has genetically engineered in these bacteria’s. Villads Egede Johansen, first author said, “It is crucial to map the genes responsible for the structural coloration for further understanding of how nanostructures are engineered in nature.” He also added that this is the first study of genes with respect to structural colors.
The genetic information was compared to the optical properties to understand the process by which color of the colony is regulated by genes. The researchers changed the bacteria’s ability to move by genetically mutating the bacteria. This led to the alteration of geometry of the colonies, which also changed their colors. They also made duller colors or made the color to disappear completely.
Dr. Colin Ingham, senior author said, “We mapped several genes with previously unknown functions and we correlated them to the colonies’ self-organizational capacity and their coloration.” In future, this study might lead to the development of biodegradable paints and might increase the growth of global paints and coatings market, as elaborated in the global paints and coatings market report published by Coherent Market Insights.
