Contactless Payment Readers being tested by London Street Performers
A new scheme launched in London, allows street performers to collect money through contactless payment terminals, on May 28, 2018.
The contactless payment project was launched by Sadiq Khan, the major of the city. The project was possible due to the collaboration with Busk In London and iZettle, which is a Swedish payments firm bought by PayPal for US$ 2.2 billion.
iZettle’s contactless readers is being tested by a few performers on the streets, which might soon be rolled out across 32 boroughs in London.
One of the full-time street performers who was part of the trial, said “I had a significant impact on contributions. More people than ever tap-to-donate whilst I sing, and often, when one person does, another follows.”
The readers once connected to a smartphone or tablet can accept payments of fixed amounts, which are set by the individual performer. This machine also work well with contactless cards, phones, and smartwatches as well.
No information has been revealed about how many readers will be provided to street performers in London, and whether or not they will have to pay for the readers themselves.
In China, is it extremely common to view street performers and beggars use QR codes to gather mobile tips, however, this scheme is the first of its kind to be implemented by a city authority.
“Busking helps emerging artists to hone their talent and gives them the chance to perform in front of huge numbers of people. I’m delighted that iZettle has chosen London to launch this innovative scheme – allowing artists to accept donations by card payment, as well as cash. Now, more Londoners will be able to show their support to the capital’s brilliant, talented street performers.” Said the city mayor.
