Electronic Nose to Sniff Out Colon Diseases

An electronic nose device named Moosy 32 eNose can detect the activeness of disease with 90% accuracy.

Researchers from the Gandia campus of Valencia’s Polytechnic University and the La Fe Health Investigation Institute reported on December 28, 2017 that they have developed a prototype of an electronic nose that can distinguish between patients with Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis. According to researchers, this device could assist physicians to examine digestive system, which can analyze the state of the patient in less than three minutes.

Conventionally invasive tests are used to diagnose and evaluate inflammatory activity as a result of colon- related illnesses, such as Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis. Around 200,000 people in Spain are currently suffering from colon diseases and the rise in incidence is expected to increase by 3% annually. This novel device is expected to contribute in development of non-invasive diagnosing systems. Researchers performed tests with 445 samples and have obtained positive results. Device can detect volatile organic compounds which act as diagnostic markers to reveal the intensity level of the diseases.

According to Rapid Medical Diagnostic Devices Market report published by Coherent Market Insights, fast and accurate diagnosis helps doctors to prescribe the appropriate medication in a short span of time. “The concentration of these components can be a differentiating marker between certain bowel diseases and their accurate detection by way of non-invasive devices such as the electronic nose would be a great step forward for the detection and monitoring of the evolution of these diseases,” said Pilar Nos, Head of the Digestive System Medicine Department at La Fe Health Investigation Institute in Spain. The system is being tested for further medical uses, such as detecting prostate cancer. Other studies, with positive results, are also being performed such as detecting the microbial contamination of water or determining the maturity level of fruit, which could have key applications within the agro-food industry.
