First 5G Specification has Officially been Completed
The world’s first 5G specifications have been completed and the technology is under development, according to a report published by Fierce Wireless on December 20, 2017.
3GPP — the organization that governs cellular standards — has officially signed off on the first specification for 5G NR standard at a meeting in Lisbon, Portugal. Getting a formal agreed standard for 5G networks will enable companies understand the standards they are required to achieve in order to build a 5G-approved network. The finished 5G specification include requirement of 600 and 700 MHz bands to the millimeter wave portion of the spectrum at 50 GHz.
Finalizing of the standards is just the first step towards setting up a 5G network, as it would first require hardware companies to deliver the expected standards, which is not expected to happen anytime soon. The International Telecommunication Union (the ITU) and the 3GPP officially defined a 4G network as providing a 100-Mbps data rate when moving and a 1 Gpbs while stationary. This was a standard set way too high for our present day so-called 4G and LTE networks, as they claim to, however, are unable to provide the same.
Although, companies are unable to meet the exact standards, it is always important to have a formal goalpost to work towards. Companies such as T-Mobile and Verizon are already promising to roll out 5G networks in 2018 and 2019. This proves that 5G NR standard has significantly progressed than just having a logo.
Increasing emphasis on the development of high-speed internet technology such as 4G and 5G technologies, is in turn, expected to drive demand for advanced mobile phones. The future phones are expected to have features such as high processing capability, versatility, and durability, as reported by flagship smartphone market report published by Coherent Market Insights. Thus, the launch of 5G network is projected to create immense scope for phone manufacturers to create or upgrade device compatible with such high-speed and high standard networks.
