New AI System Identifies Material Properties

A team of researchers at MIT, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and the University of California at Berkeley created a new artificial intelligence system capable of producing particular materials.

Artificial intelligence is rapidly emerging, advancing the scope of sectors such as the telecommunications and healthcare, as per artificial intelligence in healthcare market report, published by Coherent Market Insights.

“Computational materials scientists have made a lot of progress in what material to design based on desired properties. But because of that success, the bottleneck has shifted to, ‘Okay, now how do I make it?’” says Elsa Olivetti, the Atlantic Richfield Assistant Professor of Energy Studies in MIT’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE).

The team of researchers created a database that contains recipes materials extracted from millions of papers. If a particular material is to be found then, the name of the target material is required to be entered and any other criteria such as its reaction conditions, fabrication processes and the suggested recipes are displayed.

Olivetti and her colleagues developed a machine-learning system that has the potential to analyze a research paper, deduce which of its paragraphs contain materials recipes, and classify the words in those paragraphs according to their roles within the recipes.

Machine learning is a rapidly emerging branch of artificial intelligence. Application of machine learning is increasing due to the high accuracy it provides to systems, as per machine learning market report, published by Coherent Market Insights.

In journal Chemistry of Materials, machine-learning system was demonstrated to enable analysis of the extracted data to infer general characteristics of classes of materials and particular characteristics of individual materials.

This research was a result of the advancements such as material genome initiative and materials project, which have produced computational tools for designing new materials useful for electronics to aeronautics and civil engineering.
