Officials at the Olympics Confirm Cyberattack Experience

The Pyeongchang Winter Games opening ceremony witness a shutdown of internet and Wi Fi due to a cyberattack.

The Olympic officials reported the crashing of the internal systems before the ceremony on Friday, however, did not disrupt the high-tech gala.
Cyber security experts warned of potential attacks on the Winter Olympics, with both North Korea and Russia touted as possible sources. In January 2017, a malware attack targeted organisations involved with the olympics.

South Korea’s defense ministry and cybersecurity experts are investigating the attack that was held on Friday, however, they have not revealed who the real culprit was.
“At the moment we are making sure that our systems are secure, which they are, so discussing details of it is not helpful,” he said.

“I certainly don’t know who it is, and best industry practice is that you don’t talk about an attack at this stage,” Adams added.
Previously, North Korea had been accused of involvement in several cyber incidents, including the global ‘WannaCry’ attack in 2017.
This in turn, is increasing awareness about cyberattacks, thus imposing the need for several cyber security measures to be taken on the state, national, as well.
