Researchers Developed Lithium Battery That Can Function at Extreme Cold Conditions
Researchers have developed a lithium battery that can function at -70 degree Celsius, according to a study conducted on February 28, 2018.
Batteries that can operate at cold climates have its own limitations. Recently, few battery researchers have developed a design which can function at extreme cold conditions. Electrolyte and electrodes play a major role in the performance of a battery.
Lithium ion batteries usually does not work under ultra-chill climates due to the sluggish formation of the conventional electrolytes. This was a major problem faced by the researchers. For the experiments, they used ester based electrolyte and two organic compounds for electrodes. Like the electrodes used in lithium ion batteries, these compounds does not depend on intercalation. According to the researchers, with the ethyl acetated based electrolyte and organic polymers electrode, the battery can withstand -70 degree Celsius.
The research team finds this method to be better than other attempts to enhance the function of lithium-ion batteries. Other researchers have tried many alternative methods to develop batteries that can be used at extreme cold conditions.
Dr. Yong-yao Xia, a battery researcher said, “Compared to the transition-metal-containing electrodes materials in conventional lithium-ion batteries, organic materials are abundant, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly.” This battery still requires further studies for it to be bought into the market. They still find the specific energy of the battery to be low when compared to the conventional batteries. Even though they have low specific energy, they can be used in few specific applications.
