Researchers Explore Human Skin to Study the Causes of Wrinkle

Researchers go deep into human skin to understand the causes of wrinkles, according to a study conducted on February 28, 2018.

Moisture level plays an important role in the formation of wrinkles. When the environmental conditions are dry, the outermost layer of skin becomes dry and cells are damaged. To prevent wrinkles many methods have been developed and it mainly focuses on biochemical approaches. Researchers have now applied a biomechanical perspective to learn about the causes of wrinkles.

Many computer models have been developed by the research team to build three-dimensional characterizations of wrinkles. This is done to help scientists in industries and academia. These models will help them understand the causes for the formation of micro-wrinkles. Dr. Georges Limbert, associate professor said, “The outermost layer of our skin is mainly composed of dead cells bound by lipids. Besides its critical physiological functions as a biochemical barrier, this very thin layer plays a key role in determining the characteristics of skin micro-wrinkles, even in younger people.”

The outer layer becomes more dry and stiff when there is a drop in relative humidity. Due to this, wrinkles at the skin surface become deeper and more visible. Micro-wrinkles can be minimized by keeping the skin hydrated. With the help of these computer models, new preventive and treatment solutions can be discovered and effects of aging can be mitigated from our skin. This study tells about the need to go more in depth about various aspects of skin related to health and aging.
