Researchers Improve the Trafficking Of Brain-Cell Proteins

Researchers improve the trafficking of brain-cell proteins that will help to bring in new therapies for Alzheimer’s disease, according to a study conducted on March 1, 2018.

A reduction in the production of two proteins which leads to brain cell death was observed when a compound enhanced the shuttling of proteins within the cells. Two types of protein were clumped in the brain tissue of people with Alzheimer’s. Amyloid beta protein is usually accumulated outside the brain cells and Tau protein is found within the cells. These proteins are the reason for brain-cell death. A defect in the system is the reason for protein accumulation and they are shipped in packages known as endosomes. Endosomal network is responsible for shuttling them around the cells. Proper function of this system will give properly processed or recycled proteins.

According to a recent study, production of the two proteins can be hindered if the function of endosomal network can be boosted by any compound. Alzheimer’s can be treated by targeting the defects present in the endosomal network. Researchers got skin cells from patients suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and from patients who did not have dementia. The skin cells were then reprogrammed to function as stem cells, called as induced pluripotent stem cells. Then, neurons of same genetics were created by them. This cells also showed the tendency to produce more amount of the two proteins found in the brain cells. The research team was able to measure the production of these proteins in the newly developed neurons.

A compound called as retromer was tested by the scientists. They observed that function of retromer is enhanced by a compound called R33. This led to a reduction in the protein production. This development would bring in new therapies for Alzheimer’s disease and thereby, will increase the growth of advanced therapy medicinal products market, as detailed in the advanced therapy medicinal products market report published by Coherent Market Insights.
