Scientists Discover 10,000 Black Holes at the Center of Galaxy
Scientists found 10,000 black holes at the center of Milky Way, according to a report published on April 4, 2018.
The supermassive black hole at the center of galaxy was suspected to be surrounded by many smaller black holes by scientists. It is difficult to see them and so the theory has not been proven yet. However, now scientists were able to find small traces of it in the galaxy. X-rays emitted by low-mass black holes were looked upon by the researchers. Upon searching, they got evidence of 300 to 500 of low-mass black holes and from this, number of isolated black holes could be inferred and it was found to be 10,000 black holes.
According to the researchers, a major theory is confirmed through this finding and it has many implications. This finding will significantly aid in advancement of gravitational wave research, as it will help in the prediction of number of gravitational wave fronts associated with the black holes. Scientists say that the center of galaxy has all the information that astrophysicists need. The supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way is called as Sagittarius A (Sgr A) and contains about four million times the mass of the sun.
For the identification of X-ray signatures of black hole binaries, the data from the Chandra X-ray space telescope was studied by the scientists. Within three light years of Sagittarius A, 12 of the objects were found. Their properties were analyzed further and 500 black hole binaries are expected to be present there in total.
