Study confirms that Insomnia is Hereditary

Research reveals that sleep problems might be triggered by specific genes, according to a study conducted on March 9, 2018.

In this study, a genetic link between insomnia and psychiatric disorders has also been demonstrated by the researchers. 20 percent of Americans and 50 percent of U.S. military veterans are found to have trouble in getting proper sleep. The effects of insomnia will weaken a person’s health and will be a huge strain for the healthcare system. Chronic insomnia is associated with health issues such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and mental illness. In the past, studies have shown that insomnia is heritable. Results of these studies were used by the researchers to study about involvement of various genes. According to the researchers, new treatments can be developed by understanding the molecular bases for insomnia.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) were conducted by the research team. They analyzed the DNA samples of over 33,000 soldiers who were participating in the Army Study To Assess Risk and Resilience in Servicemembers (STARRS). To study the influence of ancestral lineages, data collected from soldiers of European, African and Latino descent were grouped separately. The results were then compared to the results of two recent studies. Therefore, this study confirms that insomnia is partially caused due to hereditary.

Murray Stein said, “The genetic correlation between insomnia disorder and other psychiatric disorders, such as major depression, and physical disorders such as type 2 diabetes suggests a shared genetic diathesis for these commonly co-occurring phenotypes.” The existence of specific variants on chromosome 7 was associated with insomnia. Differences on chromosome 9 were found in people of European descent.

This study, which is useful for developing new treatments for insomnia will increase the growth of insomnia therapeutics market, as detailed in the insomnia therapeutics market report published by Coherent Market Insights.
