Typing on Gaming Keyboards Will be Easier With the Development of VR Keyboards
VR keyboards will soon be new reality, as Logitech is changing its approach, using Vive Tracker.
Logitech is engaging with developers to revolutionize keyboards using HTC’s Vive Tracker. The latest development of Logitech has created a way for the HTC Vive Tracker to represent a keyboard across the Steam VR system. The VR keyboard is nothing more than a software that presents an overlaid virtual representation of a keyboard in any VR application, complete with animations on pressing of keys. The keyboard is compatible with all apps developed via SteamVR. The developer’s application does not require to manage anything, as the overlay automatically appears when turning on the associated Vive Tracker.
The keyboard offers more than just that, it uses the Vive’s existing tracking to enhance real typing experience that makes hands visible while typing.
BRIDGE kit — is the name given to the VR keyboard kit, which is being used to assist creators in making software and apps that use the capability. This BRIDGE kit could help apps such as VR Desktop and Bigscreen. These VR applications offer ways to carry out interaction with traditional apps on a computer while wearing a headset. The keyboard is also expected to support the creation of new VR apps that integrate input of traditional keyboards, alongside extending the overall time spent in VR. The need for a user to access a keyboard while inside VR is a challenge, which has influenced several manufacturers to design VR headsets with flip-up displays to enable the user to pop out and type for a minute, returning to VR.
The keyboard works by attaching a Vive Tracker to a specific spot on the Logitech G gaming keyboard. Logitech is planning on distributing 50 such pieces to designers for enhancing the overall user experience. Applications to get one of the kits will be accepted through Nov. 16, and if interest is great enough they may build additional units later.
The company is accepting applications by those interested in purchasing the kit from November 16, 2017, hoping to make VR a bigger part of human daily activities.
