UK To Ban Fossil Fuel Vehicles By 2040
France is not the only country preparing to ditch fossil fuels, as the UK is following lead, reported a source in July 2017.
The UK is planning its ban on selling new fossil fuel-powered vehicles from 2040 onwards. The government claims this would be an initiative to improve air quality, as airborne pollution is the impending environmental risk to public health. Cutting off the sales of the vehicles that pollute the air further, will in turn help tackle pollution quickly. This initiative is part of a US$ 3.9 billion strategy that includes retrofitting buses, altering roads and tweaking traffic light patterns to lower the emission rate.
The government is likely to charge an institute pollution-oriented tax as an optional measure to punishing drivers who drive in specific areas such as London’s planned zero emission zone.
Greenpeace says “this plan is miles away from achieving its goal of rapidly cutting pollution. There need to be clean air zones, and more funding to tackle local pollution. The sales cutoff certainly won’t address car-based pollution in the short term — you won’t have incentives to ditch your car before 2040, and you could keep driving your vehicle for a while longer than that.”
This would be a big step for UK, considering that it is the world’s most important car market and a fossil fuel car ban will leave automakers around the world in a difficult situation. The emission ban, however, would not affect the British brands like Aston Martin and Jaguar, who have already started manufacturing electric. Two decades seems a short period of time for most companies to do away with their well- established engine work. The UK’s decision is just a nudge towards the looming age of electric vehicles that are already being manufactured and sold today.
