Wearable Devices to Detect Epilepsy Attacks
Empatica-a company developing wearable medical devices-has developed Embrace, to aid patients suffering from epilepsy.
Increasing awareness about healthcare among the populace coupled with advancements in technology is boosting the demand for medical wearable devices, as per a report published on wearable medical devices market, by Coherent Market Insights.
Empatica released its device called Embrace to enable monitoring of stress and seizures, said Picard. This is a wristbands, which resembles watches. However, it has a solid silver or black front. Sensors are placed below the face, to enable tracking of pulse, body motion, temperature, and electrodermal activity (EDA), which involves subtle electrical changes across the skin.
For people suffering from epilepsy, a sharp rise in signals of movement could indicate a severe life-threatening seizure. The wristband detects a seizure by vibrating, to which the user responds. In most cases, however, people fall unconscious and thus cannot respond actively. In such dangerous seizure cases, an app integrated with the wearable band, sends an alert to a designated individual.
“If somebody goes to check on a person during or after they have had a grand mal seizure, then they are less likely to die. In some cases, simply saying the person’s name or turning them over (gentle stimulation) might save their life. Anybody could do this potentially life-saving action, they just need to know to go check on the person.” said Picard, a researcher.
This device is also useful for monitoring stress levels among children suffering from emotion regulation issues or autism. In such cases, the device determines when a child is experiencing a ‘fight-or-flight response’ and can be set to alert parents or teachers, reports MIT.
Picard said: “Stress signals reach every organ of your body, so these stress signals are potentially influencing everything. Sometimes you don’t realize until you get that just-in-time notice.”
In this manner this device can be used to measure stress levels by healthy individuals as well, as it can determine if they are susceptible to develop a heart attack in case of recurrent and prolonged increased levels of stress.
