Xiaomi Shipped 9.2 Million Smartphones in India
On November 13, 2017, Xiaomi announced to have hit record by shipping around 9.2 million smartphones in India in the third quarter of 2017, and expected to beat Samsung in the near future.
Xiaomi – a Chinese electronics and software company, announced on November 13, 2017 that it shipped around 9.2 million smartphones in India in the third quarter of 2017. The company shipped around 70 million units till October, 2017. Xiaomi was reported to be the fastest growing smartphone company globally, in terms of shipments of over 81 percent year-over-year, due to major sales in both India and China.
Manu Kumar Jain, Vice President and Managing Director of Xiaomi India said, “We started with a humble beginning of selling 100,000 per quarter in 2014, crossed the 1 million mark in Q3 2015, 3 million in Q3 2016 and now for the first time – 9 million in Q3 2017.”
Jain also said that the Xiaomi smartphones were considered as the top three smartphones in India in 2017, which include Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, Redmi 4, and Redmi 4A. He further added, “Our motto has always been to deliver high quality innovative products at affordable price!”
India is becoming the second most prominent market for Xiaomi after China. The company announced to have sold over 1 million devices during last month’s Diwali sales. Moreover, it’s recently launched, Redmi Y1, which is a selfie-centric device had a major sale when they were up for flash sale for the first time on November 8, 2017. The company said that it had sold over 1.5 lakh units of the Xiaomi Redmi Y1 and Redmi Y1 Lite within three minutes of the flash sale.
Xiaomi is expected to beat Samsung in India in the near future. One of the main reasons for the growth of Xiaomi in India is the less entry barriers in the region. There is a strong competition among Samsung, Vivo, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Lenovo, the top five sellers in the country, who make around 75% of its total smartphone shipments. Moreover, increasing prominence of LTE (Long-Term Evolution) among the advancing population is also fueling growth of the Xiaomi smartphones.
According to International Data Corporation (IDC), Xiaomi ranked fifth position in the global smartphone rankings for third quarter of 2017. The company in total has sold 27.6 million units in the quarter, which is up by 102.6% from the same period in 2016.
