YouTube to Expand Red Service Over 100 Countries
YouTube chief executive Susan Wojcicki announced on February 13, 2018, that YouTube will be expanding red subscription service to 100 countries worldwide.
YouTube red is a paid streaming subscription service, which is only available for United States, Australia, Mexico, New Zealand, and South Korea. The subscription service was launched in October 2015. The service offers as-free access to the videos for subscription charges of US$ 9.99. It was initially designed as a replacement to Google Music Key to simplify access to YouTube video and paly music on existing YouTube and Google accounts. However, Google did not disclose if the South Africa will be involved in the expansion plan.
If user subscribes from one of the supported countries and travel outside, he will not be able to download videos, background playback will be disabled, and ads will be visible. Any videos downloaded in the permitted country will be available as offline videos for 30 days. YouTube Red members can continue to watch YouTube Red Original movies and series while traveling outside the supported countries
The company announced that it will split subscription revenue with owners of the content to listen or access video on the service. Also, the company has signed on independent creators, record labels, TV networks and movie studios to the program. Creators who didn’t sign on to YouTube Red had their videos on the ad-free YouTube hidden from view. In recent past,
YouTube stopped using Red service, as layering exclusive access to original series and movies, featuring YouTube stars such as PewDiePie and the toxic influencer of the moment Logan Paul. Both of the creators suffered from controversy as YouTube has issues with content from some of its most popular entertainers. As the video sharing platform is focused on expansion, content issues and the attendant advertising struggles that come with them are expected to hinder the process. Wojcicki has said that YouTube will bring on 10,000 people to vet content.
