Bill to Confine Insurance Coverage for Abortions in Texas Sanctioned by the State’s House of Representatives

A Texas bill confining insurance coverage typically for abortions received approval from the state’s House of Representatives managed and controlled by the Republicans of Texas on August 9, 2017. Critics labeled this move as damaging and cruel to women’s health. This move would ban any kind of insurance coverage for abortions. Women who wish to have coverage for their abortion will have to buy a supplemental plan tailored specifically for abortion. This is the most recent effort by the highly populated state controlled by republicans to limit the procedure. If the bill is enacted successfully, it would be effective from December 1, 2017 and would make Texas the eleventh state to confine abortion coverage in all the private insurance plans created in the state.

A similar bill has been passed by the Republican-controlled Committee, and Greg Abbott, the Republican Governor has expressed strong support for the effort. People backing the bill say it will protect and prevent opponents of abortion from subsidizing the practice. A democratic critic criticized it as pushing people to purchase ‘rape insurance’. The bill’s sponsor and Republican Representative, John Smithee, stated on Tuesday in House debate before the receiving bill received preliminary approval that, “it’s a question of monetary freedom and freedom of any kind in general.”

According to the information provided by Brandon Creighton, Senate bill’s Republican sponsor, the local media supplemental insurance coverage would cost anything from $ 12 to $ 80 for a year. House Bill 214 effective in Texas, which passed most probably on a party-line vote, is not offering exceptions for incest or rape cases. Therefore, social groups related to Abortion rights are most likely to fight this measure legally in court if the bill is enacted. Chris Turner, Democratic Representative, mentioned in a statement that, “parents and women will have to face dreadful decision of having to buy a ‘rape insurance’ to get a coverage if they get victimized. This is not only absurd but cruel as well.”
