Cigarette Filters Can Be Used to Develop Energy Storage Material
Scientists reveal that cigarette butts can be transformed into an energy storing material, according to a report published on November 16, 2017.
The research team has developed methods to convert cigarette butts into carbon-based material with high performance that can be used for energy storage. One of the disadvantages of renewable energy is the difficulty in storing the energy. By recycling old cigarette butts, environmental pollution caused due to it can be reduced, which is increasing at a faster rate across the world. Every year, environment is being polluted by around 5.6 trillion cigarettes.
It contains chemicals that cause cancer, pesticides, and nicotine. A material with many small pores are obtained on burning them. A high surface area is provided by the tiny pores, which brings in the capability to store energy. Electrodes of supercapacitors can be coated using this material, thereby developing an efficient battery, which can be used in electronic gadgets and electric vehicles. Production costs can also be reduced by this new approach. On carrying out tests, it was found that the material could store more electrical energy as compared to other available alternatives.
Professor Jongheop Yi, co-author of the study said, “Our study has shown that used-cigarette filters can be transformed into a high-performing carbon-based material using a simple one step process, which simultaneously offers a green solution to meeting the energy demands of society.” This study is expected to increase growth of advanced energy storage market, as elaborated in the advanced energy storage market report published by Coherent Market Insights.
