Collaborative Treatment Is Improving Patients’ Outcomes
Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) is pioneering the idea of collaborative treatments by consolidating medical expertise and surgical skills of the world for the patients’ benefit in terms of cost and efficiency. They have evidence to prove that sustainable advantages come through collaborative relationships with other hospitals interested in delivering the highest quality medical care.
HSS president and CEO Lou Shapiro boast the institute’s unique experience and advanced knowledge in prolific inventions and innovations, which it wants to syndicate with other institutes that will ensure growth through quality performance for consumers, their partner institutions and for HSS.
HSS has created its Global Orthopedic Alliance, taking into account the variation in needs of health system, which systematically transfer knowledge and other support to achieve different degrees of transformations. It provides mentorship, education, and consultations to hospitals interested in specialization in musculoskeletal care by adopting the model of care that’s been successful for HSS.
Dr. Charles Cornell, the orthopedic surgeon at HSS, talks about the great success in exporting their brand to six other countries outside the U.S. – Brazil, Greece, Ghana, China, South Korea, and England.
One such noteworthy success is with Hospital Alvarado in San Paulo, Brazil. HSS has entered into a partnership with Hospital Alvarado in 2014 with a focus on total joint replacements of which HSS performs more than 10,000 each year. Accordingly, physicians and surgical staff at Hospital Alvarado are getting access to seminars, symposia, and online videos on HSS e-Academy portal in addition to mentorship and training opportunities which benefited both patients and hospitals.
After three years, this partnership has empowered Hospital Alvarado to a large extent which is now on its way to becoming the leader in joint replacement and musculoskeletal treatment in Brazil.
Shapiro hopes to transfer this HSS brand all over the world to help patients and hospitals at the local level.
