Chromatography in Legalizing Cannabis

One of the biggest trade shows, Pittcon addressed the changing role of cannabis in society by addressing the challenges modern analytical labs faced with legalized cannabis.

Cannabis, also known as marijuana is a psychoactive drug from the Cannabis plant intended for medical or recreational use. The cannabis market has gained a significant traction in the past few years especially in the U.S. The Pittcon show took place in Chicago in March 2017. Gas chromatography plays an important role in the new world of legalized cannabis.

Although changing the law on cannabis is not straightforward, systems must be in place that allow states to regulate the industry. Laboratories must be efficient to test cannabis for strength or potency. Detecting any adulterants and ensuring that medicinal cannabis ifs safe for patients are major aspects of lab testing. Extracting key components from cannabis and purifying various cannabis forms could be a growth industry following legalization.

Although solvent extraction is the most convenient method, the residual solvent extracts should be removed before using cannabis. Gas chromatography is one of the key methods for measuring residual solvents. According to Gas Chromatography Market report published by Coherent Market Insights, gas chromatography is used to detect drugs, identify and investigate unknown and explosive samples. In biotechnology and pharmaceutical domain, gas chromatography is used for analytical research and development, drug formulations and production, quality control, and quality assurance. Tetrahydrocannabinol is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis. This compound needs to be analyzed for the drugs potency.

Gas and liquid chromatography methods can carry out these analyses depending on requirement. Chromatography can also analyze cannabis samples for impurities such as pesticides or fungi. For patients who rely on medicinal cannabis these contaminants could cause complications, especially if the patient has a compromised immune system. Pittcon addressed the impact the changes in law have had on public health since cannabis was legalized.
