Google Adds Wheelchair-Accessible Routes to Google Maps
Google adds a new feature of wheelchair-accessible routes to Google Maps, according to a report published on March 16, 2018.
Until now, people who are differently abled had difficulties in travelling to places, as few stations might not be wheelchair-friendly or will have out of service elevators. This new feature in Google Maps, which provides accessibility to wheelchairs will be useful for the differently abled people. Route options available in Google Maps app have options such as best route, fewer transfers, and less walking. The new update known as wheelchair-accessible will be useful for transit riders in London, New York, Tokyo, Mexico City, and Sydney. Disabled folks and people with strollers will find this very useful.
However, this update, which is in the initial stage has few disadvantages. Detailed information about sidewalk condition and grade, curb cuts, pedestrian crossing zones and buildings accessible to wheelchair-entrances are yet to be integrated into the maps. Integration of these features is possible, as few students had done this earlier. The users can access this new feature in the Google Maps app by first entering a desired destination followed by tap directions and selecting public transportation icon. Then, select options and wheelchair-accessible option will be available under the routes section. Further, directions by the Maps will provide the user with routes that consider mobility needs.
This new development is expected to increase the global wheelchairs market, as elaborated in the global wheelchairs market report published by Coherent Market Insights.
