Researchers Developed Sensor to Measure Internal Battery Temperature
Researchers from the University Of Warwick (WMG) have developed a new sensor that can measure the temperature of internal battery, according to a report published in Engadget on February 20, 2018.
In the last half-decade, a massive improvement has been observed in the field of lithium-ion batteries. However, charging of these batteries still takes a long time and it is a major issue faced by the electric vehicles (EVs). The development of these new sensors will be a solution to the problem of charging these batteries. According to the researchers, they can be recharged five times quicker without causing any overheating problems.
Lithium will buildup on overcharging a lithium-ion-battery and can lead to catastrophic failure. This further leads to the emission of gases from electrolyte and can blow up the battery. These are the reasons why charging limits are mentioned by the manufacturers in these batteries. These limits are imposed on the basis of internal temperatures, which are hard to be measured. WMG has developed a sensor, which can serve as a solution to this problem. A chemical layer has been added to protect this fiber optic sensor and for precise thermal measurements, they can be inserted into a lithium-ion cell. This does not affect the performance of the sensors.
The sensor was tested on standard 18650 li-ion cells, which were used in Tesla’s Model S and X. More research has to be done on this as battery makers are still not sure about how to install these sensors into the cells. Faster charging speeds of lithium-ion battery by integrating sensors will increase the growth of lithium ion battery market, as detailed in the lithium ion battery market report published by Coherent Market Insights.
