Research reveals that autonomous vehicles contribute to environmental benefits, according to a study conducted on February 15, 2018.

The contributions of sensing and computing systems to energy use and emission of greenhouse gases were assessed in detail in this research. Cameras, sonar, radar, LiDar, a GPS navigation system, a computer and support structures are often included in autonomous vehicles, which were formally known as connected and automated vehicles (CAVs). Two types of CAVs were observed by the researchers: the ones powered by internal combustion engines and electric vehicles powered by battery. To create six scenarios, both vehicle types were paired to three sizes of sensing and computer subsystems. Then, lifetime energy use and greenhouse gas emissions for each situation was estimated using life-cycle assessment methodology.

From the results obtained, it was observed that greenhouse gas emissions by battery-powered autonomous vehicles was 40 percent lower than the vehicles powered by internal-combustion engines. Jim Gawron, lead author of the study said, “We’ve shown in this paper that a battery-electric vehicle is a better platform for CAV components compared to the internal-combustion engine vehicle in terms of minimizing environmental impacts.” The sensing and computing subsystems in CAVs is found to have an increased use of energy and greenhouse gas emissions, as power consumption, weight and aerodynamic drag is high. However, the operational benefits of self-driving vehicles outweigh these disadvantages.
