Trumpcare Scrapes through in Lower House: Revised Senate Bill on the Cards

Trumpcare Scrapes through in Lower House

The American Health Care Act of 2017 (AHCA), also called Trumpcare was passed by a slim majority of 217 to 213 in the U.S. House of Representatives on May 4, 2017. The bill intended to repeal Obamacare was then sent to the Senate for further deliberations, which are expected to lead to minor amendments in the proposed bill.  The American Medical Association believes that bill H.R. 1275, officially called ‘World’s Greatest Healthcare Plan of 2017’ would reverse the coverage gains of Obamacare, leading to millions in the U.S. losing healthcare coverage.

The Senate is expected to vote on the bill in the following couple of weeks, though things have taken a rather interesting turn, with Republican Party Senator Roy Blunt stating, “The safest thing to say is there will be a Senate bill, but it will look at what the House has done and see how much of that we can incorporate in a product that works for us in reconciliation.” This comes in light of the fact that the bill only just managed to be passed in the House, with Democrats up in arms against the proposed changes in the bill. Minority leader Chuck Schumer was especially critical about the cutting of the Planned Parenthood funding, which might result in low or no cover on birth control. The New York senator took to social media to state, “Simply put #Trumpcare is a mess for the American people. We Democrats will fight tooth & nail to put your access to healthcare first.”

Among the many highly criticized ‘reforms’ proposed to be introduced in the bill is the capping of the spending on the state spending on Medicaid post-2020. Critics claim that the bill is highly skewed in favor of the wealthy, with people opting for insurance by themselves set to receive tax credits based on age, as opposed to income considered as part of Obamacare. While protests increase, President Trump was his usual optimistic self, tweeting, “I feel sure that my friend @RandPaul will come along with the new and great health care program because he knows Obamacare is a disaster!”
